Durham's oldest cold case headed back to court

Whenever Douglas Smith was working the night shift at the auto plant, he made sure to check in on his new young wife and 10-month old baby girl before they went to bed. On the evening of December 9, 1974 Smith's wife Beverly did not pick up the phone. He got worried and called his neighbours Alan and Linda Smith (no relation), to go to his house and check up on his wife and child. They told him that she was lying on the floor dead; she had been shot in the head with a .22 caliber bullet and was lying under the kitchen table, with their daughter Rebbecca asleep in the other room. The first investigation was carried out by the newly formed Durham police, who were unable to make any arrests, and the case ended up going cold for more than 30 years. Then in 2008, the Durham police arrested Alan Smith, the neighbour that Douglas Smith had turned to for help on the night of his wife’s murder. In the three years there had been many twists and new evidence. The wife of Alan Smith possible murderer Linda has come back with many new stories saying she was there when her ex-husband killed her, or that she heard it. She was the arrested for obstruction of justice and pleaded guilty, but her lawyer says she suffers from trauma and mental difficulties. Alan Smith was let out of prison pending new evidence. Beverly Lynn Smith's twin sister Barbara Brown has been trying for the last 30 years to find the true murderer of her sister and will not stop until she does.

I personally think that Alan Smith is the murderer. I think this because to me the evidence seems almost all in his favour. If he is the one who did it I find this very unsettling because he was their neighbor and a good enough friend to check up on them by request of Douglas Smith. Being a friend and neighbour he knew when he could kill her. He also knew that they were newlywed, and had a new baby girl of 10 months old. He ripped a mother away from the daughter Rebbecca and a wife away from the husband Douglas and should pay for his killing.
